FM Levy leaves for OSCE Conference

Foreign Minister David Levy will be attending the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) conference being held in Istanbul between 17-19.11.99, where he will meet with his counterparts from Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Egypt and Jordan, as well as participate in a meeting of Mediterranean and European foreign ministers. Together with Prime Minister Barak, Levy will also meet Turkish President Suleiman Demirel, who is hosting this year's conference.

Israel and several other Mediterranean basin states (Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) have observer status at the OSCE, enabling them to participate in some of the organization's activities and to hold dialogues on issues of common interest with OSCE members, including seminars on security concepts.

At the Istanbul conference, the 54 OSCE members will discuss security and arms control issues and the situation in Chechnya and the Balkans.
