Foreign Minister of Mauritania to Visit

Foreign Minister of Mauritania Cheikh el-Avia Ould Mohamed Khouna will visit Israel this Tuesday to Thursday, 27-29.10.98.

This is Foreign Minister Khouna's first visit to Israel. While here, he will meet with senior government officials, visit Yad Vashem and Islamic holy places in Jerusalem.

Israel and Mauritania established relations at the level of interest offices in November 1995, under the auspices of Spain. The last high-level meeting took place at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York this past September, when Prime Minister Netanyahu met with Cheikh Khouna. Israel ascribes much importance to this visit, which is the first by a senior government representative from an Arab country, except for Egypt and Jordan.
