Police hold meeting on palestinian activity

Minister of Public Security Avigdor Kahalani held yesterday evening (Tuesday), 18.11.97, a meeting to discuss the issue of Palestinian violations of the Oslo Accords in eastern Jerusalem, under the auspices of the inter-ministerial committee on Jerusalem, headed by the minister.

Public Security Minister Kahalani, Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert and senior police, IDF and GSS officials participated.

Among its activities, this committee follows activities of the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem that are forbidden and in opposition to the Oslo Accords. Minister Kahalani emphasized that Palestinian Authority plans to conduct a census in eastern Jerusalem seriously harm Israeli sovereignty in the city, which is Israel's capital. He further emphasized that any attempt to carry out the census will be foiled as it occurs.

It was agreed that Minister Kahalani will raise the issue for further discussion at the next cabinet meeting, in the framework of the steering committee attached to the ministerial committee on Jerusalem.

On the operative level, the Minister instructed the Jerusalem region police commander to strengthen police presence in Jerusalem's eastern neighborhoods, to keep an eye on anyone who aids and abets damaging Israeli sovereignty and to take steps against the census takers.

The activities of the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem health institutions and its attempt to gain control of "Mokassed" Hospital on the Mt. of Olives were also discussed.

Minister Kahalani places the greatest importance on dealing with these matters.
