IDF Spokesman Announcement

Eleven IDF servicemen from the Israel Navy commando unit were killed and one is missing in a confrontation with terrorists north of Tyre on the night of 4-5 September. Four IDF soldiers were wounded, one seriously and three moderately.

The naval commando unit was on its way to carry out an operation when at 00:40 (on 5 September) a powerful explosive device was detonated against it. The explosion was followed by the detonation of smaller devices and live fire. The commando unit returned fire, but sustained many casualties from the initial attack.

The IDF immediately organized a search and rescue operation sending a rescue force, including IAF helicopters and naval vessels, to evacuate the force and the casualties and to search for the missing soldier. After extensive searches for the missing soldier conducted until daybreak did not yield results, it was assumed that the missing soldier was very near to the center of the blast and apparently was killed.

The Defense establishment called on the International Red Cross for assistance in returning the missing soldier, and holds the Lebanese government responsible for the return of the body.
