Press release Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jerusalem, June 15, 1999 Israel-Jordan Marine Peace Park   On June 14, 1999 an agreement was signed between Israel and the U.S. launching a joint Israeli-Jordanian project to protect the Eilat- Aqaba gulf. An identical agreement was signed the previous day between the U.S. and Jordan. The signing of these agreements will enable the implementation of this project, agreed upon in the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty of October 26, 1994. Joint teams of scientists from Israel and Jordan will work together under the project to protect and research the coral reef reserves in the gulf. The parties will also exchange information and scientific data, and will conduct educational activities among the residents of Eilat and Aqaba. The agreement was signed - for Israel, by Director-General of the Nature Reserves and National Parks Authority, Mr. Aharon Vardi; and for the U.S., by Dr. Michael Crosby - at a ceremony, attended by Israel Foreign Ministry representatives. The U.S. will fund the majority of the project cost. Director of the Israel Foreign Ministry's Jordan Department, Mr. Arthur Avnon, said that Israel will propose to Jordan that the scientists engaged in the project will enjoy special arrangements for swift passage between the two countries.
