Israel-Japan Political Talks

The Israeli and Japanese foreign ministries will convene the seventh consultative forum on political issues tomorrow (Wednesday), 14 April, 1999.

The talks, which will take place in Tokyo, have been rotated between the two countries since February 1990. Heading the Israeli delegation will be Foreign Ministry Deputy Director General for Asia and the Pacific Itzhak Shelef. The Japanese delegation will be led by Kishichiro Amae, deputy director general, Middle East and Africa Division. The parties will discuss bilateral relations, global and regional issues, including the Middle East peace process.

The Japanese government is involved in the peace process and is helping to advance it, both through activity on the multilateral track -- in the donor countries forum and in dispatching a Japanese force to maintain peace on the Golan Heights -- and by providing economic aid to the Palestinian Authority, Jordan and other countries in the Middle East.

The forum convenes at a time when Israeli-Japanese relations are deepening, as can be seen by the signing of the bilateral aviation agreement last week and in the recent visits to Israel by many senior Japanese officials, including Foreign Minister Koumura, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Machimura and former trade minister Sato, who headed an economic delegation.
