Interior Ministry Official Visits Illegal Residents
Interior Ministry Population Administration Director Rafael Cohen yesterday (Monday) 29.6.98, visited women who are being detained at "Naveh Tirzah" Prison for illegal residency in Israel, and examined the conditions and length of time of their detention. The visit was held following the decision by Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein to establish a committee -- headed by the Population Administration Director and consisting of representatives from the relevant ministries -- to deal with reducing the time illegal foreign workers spend in detention.
At the end of the visit, Director Cohen announced the immediate purchase of plane tickets for 30 detainees in order to reduce the length of their detention and to enable them to return to their home countries. Today, there are an additional 45 women detainees in "Naveh Tirzah" prison, who have been there for over 14 days and whose consular officials have refused to issue them travel documents. The Interior Ministry has approached the Foreign Ministry to provide the necessary travel documents to enable these women to return to their home countries as soon as possible. Following this action, no more women detainees will remain in prison due to delays in their release caused by financial difficulties.
In an unrelated matter, a woman from Tajikstan and her family, who immigrated to Israel with forged documents, will be deported back to Tajikstan.
