DM Mordechai meets Red Cross officials

 

Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai today (Monday) 29.6.98, met with outgoing Red Cross representative in Israel Yves Giovannoni, who is completing his tenure, and with the new representative Aeschlimann Alain.

The Defense Ministry thanked the Red Cross for its intensive efforts relating to the return to Israel of the body of Sergeant-Major Itamar Ilya for burial. He emphasized the humanitarian aspects of the Israeli government's decisions, and praised the cooperation between the Red Cross and the IDF authorities and Defense Ministry.

The Defense Minister reiterated the Israeli government's commitment to make every effort through every possible intermediary, including of course the Red Cross, in order to bring to a conclusion all remaining issues, including Ron Arad, the MIAs from the battle at Sultan Ya'akoub during the Lebanon War in 1982 and other cases.

The Red Cross representative discussed his activities over the past two years, emphasizing the unique characteristics of its activities in Judea, Samaria and Lebanon. He expressed satisfaction from the cooperation with Israel and the direct access provided to him in most of the cases he had handled.
