PM Barak and Min. Melchior on Goussinsky Affair in Russia

Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ehud Barak will contact the responsible Russian government officials and ask them to evaluate the Goussinsky affair with all due consideration in order to avoid harming the Russian Jewish Congress which is actively involved in assisting many Russian Jews to make aliyah and links Jews throughout the former Soviet Union.

Israeli Society and World Jewish Communities Minister Rabbi Michael Melchior said that from conversations he has had in recent days with and from his recent trip to Russia, he understands that the Russian Jewish community is concerned even though there is no direct link between the Goussinsky affair and the Jewish community per se. He added that since Vladimir Goussinsky is a leading figure in the Russian Jewish community, his case must be monitored closely.

Minister Melchior expressed concern lest internal quarrels within the Russian Jewish community be allowed to harm the community's standing in Russia.
