Decrease in Friction and in the Number of Complaints
Between Israelis and Palestinians in Hebron
The periodic meeting between Israeli and Palestinian delegations on the matter of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) took place today (31/5) in Jerusalem. The Israeli delegation was headed by the Director General of the Foreign Ministry, Eytan Bentsur and the Palestinian delegation was headed by Saeb Erekat on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. The meeting was chaired by the commander of the Norwegian force, Arne Huuse.
The two sides noted that the last periodic report of the commander of TIPH indicated that there had been a significant drop, in comparison to the past, in the number of complaints detailed in the report. Director General Bentsur emphasized that this fact constitutes a positive sign and points to an improvement in co-existence in Hebron.
Dr. Erekat as well spoke of the decrease in friction between Israelis and Palestinians in the city and said that it is important to allow the negotiations on the final status to continue without disturbance.
In the meeting, practical matters such as continuing the renovation of buildings in Hebron and the rehabilitation works being done to the mosque in the Cave of the Patriarchs by the Wakf and the Hebron municipality were also discussed. It was agree that the next periodic meeting between the two delegations would take place in July.
