Deputy Minister Massalha briefed his hosts on the recent developments in the peace process, noting the government's decision to redeploy from Lebanon and the necessity that this redeployment be carried out without problems. Foreign Minister al-Khatib stated that Jordan welcomes Israel's decision to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 425. He also said that Jordan is a full partner to Israel's aim of a smooth implementation of the decision so that security and quiet will come to South Lebanon after the withdrawal.

The Jordanian minister gave a survey of Jordan's relations with Arab countries, and the intensive activities of King Abdullah with these states to advance the peace process. Minister al-Khatib told the deputy minister that the king will soon travel to Damascus.

Deputy Foreign Minister Massalha delivered a detailed briefing of the developments in the Palestinian track of the peace process, emphasizing Prime Minister Barak's determination to arrive at a framework agreement. The deputy minister expressed cautious optimism about the chances of reaching such an agreement this year.

With regard to Israeli-Jordanian relations, Minister al-Khatib noted the on-going and good relations at the ministerial and official levels, while differentiating between these relations and the feelings found among the population. The Jordanian Foreign Minister expressed his regrets about this situation and his hope that as the peace process continues and more concrete results will be seen in the field, this trend will fade away. Deputy Foreign Minister Massalha related his hope that the joint projects on the agenda between the two states will begin to be realized and indicated his determination to do all that can be done to advance them.

Minister al-Khatib expressed his gratitude for these comments and his pleasure at the signing of the agreement which allows the transfer of Jordanian goods to Israel and the PA on Jordanian trucks. He told of his hope that this agreement will open a new page in the economic relations between the two states.
