The release of Yair Klein
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision of the court in Sierra Leone to absolve Yair Klein of all guilt after he had been held in a Freetown jail for approximately 16 months.
Since the beginning of Yair Klein's imprisonment in Sierra Leone, the Foreign Ministry made extensive efforts to insure that he had humane conditions while in jail and that he would receive a fair trial. For this purpose, he was visited by the Ambassador and the Israeli Consul in Dakar, as well as by a senior representative of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who took care of the existence of these conditions.
At the same time, the Foreign Ministry acted with the authorities in Sierra Leone to have the most severe charge against Klein (cooperation with the rebels) dropped. These efforts were successful.
During the entire period of his imprisonment, the ministry remained in close contact with Yair Klein's family, which following his release, sent a warm thank you letter to the Foreign Ministry.
