Interior Minister Sharansky
meets Foreign Workers Representatives
Interior Minister Natan Sharansky yesterday (Tuesday) 4.1.2000, met with representatives of associations handling foreign workers in detention. He expressed satisfaction that representatives for the foreign workers and Interior Ministry officials have begun a dialogue.
Minister Sharansky stated that he believes that protecting individual rights to be of the utmost importance. It is also important to maintain contact with representatives for the other parties. However, he stated that he wishes to make it clear that the government is obligated to uphold the law and not create precedents that would cause a flood of illegal immigrants into Israel.
The foreign workers' representatives brought a number of specific cases to Minister Sharansky's attention, and he promised to examine them and make his decisions accordingly. In addition, they raised several reservations regarding the amendments submitted by the Interior Minister to Entry Into Israel Law that will regularize the handling of foreigners illegally residing in Israel. Sharansky promised to consider these reservations.
