Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jerusalem, October 29, 1997 Moratorium on export of small-arms from Israel to the US Following appeals by U.S. senators and congressmen regarding the export of Israeli arms to the civilian sector in the U.S., consultations were conducted in Israel. The outcome of these consultations - a three-month moratorium on the sale of small-arms - was conveyed through the Israeli Ambassador in Washington to California Senator Diane Feinstein, who headed the U.S. group. In his letter, the Ambassador emphasized, among others, Israel's understanding that it will not be treated differently from other manufacturers, and that if during this period of time a decision will be taken in the United States on any measures or legislation in this regard, Israel will act accordingly. In taking this decision, Israel took into account the humanitarian aspect as well as the special sensitivity to the issue of weapons in the United States. This decision nothwithstanding, it should be stressed that the Israeli companies engaged in the sale of arms do so in strict accordance with the law, both in Israel and the U.S.
