Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser   Jerusalem, 3 September 2000 PM Barak: Palestinians showing no signs of flexibility or openness At the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Sunday), 3.9.2000: Prime Minister Ehud Barak briefed the Cabinet on his expected trip to the UN Millenium Summit during which he is due to meet more than 30 world leaders. Prime Minister Barak said that during the week he will attempt to see whether the Palestinians are receptive to the ideas which US President Clinton raised at the Camp David summit and/or similar ideas which have been raised recently. Prime Minister Barak stressed that up until now he has not seen any signs of flexibility or openness on the Palestinians' part which could indicate the possibility of resuming the negotiations. The Prime Minister said that matters await a decision by Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat and added that it would not be correct on our part to do anything at this stage but wait. Prime Minister Barak added that neither a three-way meeting nor a meeting with Chairman Arafat have as yet been set. Prime Minister Barak responded positively to the European foreign ministers' decision last night and said that it is the fruit of the recent intensive diplomatic effort on our part, the goal of which was to make our position clear and form a front which will not support the Palestinians in the event that they unilaterally declare a state. The Prime Minister added that world reactions are an additional expression of the turnaround in Israel's international position.
