Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman   Jerusalem, 30 August 2000     Meeting between acting FM Ben-Ami and german FM Fischer Following the meeting today (30.8) in Berlin with his German counterpart, Joschka Fischer, Acting Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami stated: "For the Palestinians, peace is the end of the process; for Israel, it is just another stage in the process of achieving a comprehensive peace whose subsequent stages are not at all certain." Ben-Ami added: "Israel appreciates Germany's even-handed policy and feels that Germany should make clear to Arafat, in no uncertain terms, that the moment of truth has arrived, and that he can no longer avoid making crucial decisions, for the time to conclude the process and achieve peace is at hand." Ben-Ami said further that Israel appreciates Germany's special role and its policy towards Iran; however, he asked for Germany's help to contain the leaking of systems and know-how used to develop non-conventional weapons to Iran. During the coming months, the Chancellor of Germany, Gerhard Schroeder, and Foreign Minister Fischer are expected to visit Israel. Acting Foreign Minister Ben-Ami is scheduled to meet on Wednesday evening with Dutch Foreign Minister Jozias van Aartsen, in the Hague.
