Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jerusalem, 24 June 1998 Referendum - Oslo Accords At the meeting of the Foreign Ministry Directorate, the legal adviser of the Foreign Ministry did not say that a referendum is in contradiction of the Oslo accords. The headlines in today's press do not correctly reflect his remarks. It is clear that the State of Israel has every right to determine for itself the internal processes whereby it implements the Oslo accords. The legal adviser noted in this context that a decision to subordinate the implementation of the agreement to the results of a referendum is liable to arouse accusations as to the non-implementation of the agreement, should the results of the referendum be negative. The Foreign Ministry staff express their professional opinions in various forums on all areas of their expertise. It is the role and the duty of the minstry staff to express their views independently, and according to their best professional opinion on all matters relating to Israel's foreign relations, and they will continue to do so in the future as well.
