Foreign Ministry statement
on possible visit by E.U. Official

The Foreign Ministry wishes to clarify that, concerning the possible visit to Israel of European Union Commissioner Manuel Marin -- who has been invited to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa next month -- the Ministry has not asked the University to reverse its decision to award Marin an honorary degree.

Further, in the event that Marin does arrive in Israel, the Foreign Ministry will arrange meetings for the guest with relevant Government officials. While the European Union Commission and Israel do have differences of opinion on a series of matters, the appropriate manner to resolve these differences is through dialogue with responsible EU bodies.
